In a significant academic reform decision, the Jammu University Senate has approved the transition from annual to semester examination system for all remaining annual-scheme UG programs starting from the 2027-28 academic session. Currently, about 30% of JU’s UG programs still follow the annual examination pattern.
Under the new decision, all departments must implement the semester system with the CBCS framework by 2027. This will bring uniformity across all JU programs and make credit transfer easier for students wanting to change programs or institutions under the NEP 2020 framework.
The Senate also approved a revised grading scale that includes A+, A, B+, B, C, D, and F grades, replacing the older Division system (First/Second/Third Division). CGPA on a 10-point scale will now be printed on all mark sheets.
Students who are currently in annual-scheme programs will complete their degree under the existing system. The new semester system will apply to fresh admissions from 2027-28 onwards.
The decision was welcomed by students and faculty alike as a step toward academic modernization. The Academic Council will finalize implementation guidelines for the transition by January 2027.
