The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), India’s flagship financial inclusion scheme, has been enhanced with new benefits from April 2026. Citizens who do not have a bank account or have limited banking access can now open a zero-balance Jan Dhan account with enhanced insurance coverage and overdraft facilities.
In Jammu and Kashmir, over 48 lakh Jan Dhan accounts have been opened since the scheme’s launch. The number of active accounts with positive balances has increased to 68%, indicating improved financial inclusion in the region.
Updated PMJDY Benefits 2026:
• Zero-balance account with free RuPay debit card
• Accidental insurance cover: ₹2 lakh (enhanced from ₹1 lakh)
• Life insurance cover: ₹30,000
• Overdraft facility: Up to ₹15,000 (enhanced from ₹10,000)
• Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) of all government subsidies
J&K residents can open a Jan Dhan account at any bank branch or Business Correspondent (BC) outlet by submitting Aadhaar card and one passport-size photograph. The account is instantly activated.
All government scholarship and welfare payments including PMKVY, MGNREGS wages, and pension are directly credited to Jan Dhan accounts. For more information, call the PMJDY helpline at 1800-11-0001.
